Joy of Creating and Building: Encouraging Sustainable Design Thinking in Children through the Lens of Architecture

“Joy of Creating and Building” program with primary school pupil was held at SRJK (C) Serdang. It was designed as an introductory platform to the world of architecture for primary school students, aiming to inspire and nurture their creativity through sustainable design principles.
It is important to introduce the profession of architecture to young minds, fostering an understanding of the creative and innovative thinking that goes into transforming environments into buildings. The program’s vision was to expose students to the possibilities of architecture and its sustainability using the 3R approach: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Each student was given a 2′ x 2′ plot, a canvas for their imagination, where they built unique tiny homes. These individual plots were then combined to form a single city-housing development, aptly named “3R: City”. This hands-on approach allowed students to experience the process of design and construction, encouraging them to think about sustainability and the impact of architecture on our environment.
The program’s speaker was Ar. Axxu Hoi of Axial Design Architects Sdn Bhd, who provided insights and sharing in his professional expertise.
It is hoped initiatives like these can inspire the next generation of architects and innovators, fostering a stronger commitment to sustainable design principles and contributing to a more sustainable future.
